A family run rural boutique hotel and restaurant, close to Ronda.

Overlooking an azure lake below the picturesque pueblo of Zahara de la Sierra. One of Spain's heritage "white villages" and part of the "rutas de pueblos blancos". Zahara sits in the dramatic landscape of the "Sierra de Grazalema" a protected nature reserve popular for hiking, birdwatching and paragliding. Within close range are the sherry bodegas of Jerez, the flamenco bars of Sevilla and the historical town of Ronda.

Chef, Stefan Crites, left his native Columbus Ohio in 1992 to persue his culinary career in New York. He spent 12 years honing his craft in the city that never sleeps before moving to Southern Spain with wife Mona to begin the adventure that would lead them to Al Lago. Mona, originally a textile designer with her own boutique in New York has decorated Al lago, both the public areas and bedrooms with an imaginative flair using local materials to create comfortable, simple spaces, all facing towards Zahara´s landscapes.

In our well establised restaurant, which was originally a “venta” (Spanish equivalent of a bistro) serving “meat & potatoes”, we are now using locally sourced ingredients to re-create rustic Andalucian cuisine with a contemporary touch. All meals can be enjoyed out on our terrace, which stares over the wide reaching lake and off into mountains dotted with olive trees. In winter the elegant dining room beckons, with its fireplace and comfy sitting area. Al Lago´s well stocked bar, which is open all day, serves hot and cold tapas as well as home baked goodies, cocktails, freshly made lemondade, Rich hot chocolate and Morrocan mint tea in addition to all the usual refreshments. We are open to the public all year except from Mid November until Mid January (see our contact page for holiday closing dates).

We have an extensive wine list featuring many local Ronda wines and our friendly staff are happy to ensure that you always feel at home here at Al Lago.
